When the Islamic Party (PAS) emerged as the biggest victor in Malaysia’s GE15, some called this a “Green Wave” – the rise of religious populism. For many Malays, religion is now the most important identity marker. More people are sending their children to religious schools than before, and these schools blossomed to cater to the demand. Political parties have seized on this, appealing to faith in a bid for votes. But recently, the Sultan of Malaysia reminded Malaysians to keep politics out of places of worship. How did religion grow in strength in Malaysia? Does religious populism mean a turn towards right-wing politics? And how will this affect Malaysia’s balance of power?
